Best defense against tarantulas?

Hey all. I’m 29 male and single. I’m thinking about purchasing a fire-arm (shotgun) because I watched The Discovery Channel HD and I was instantly grossed out by these big huge hairy poisonous arachnids. Soo, anyhoo, I’m thinking of using a shotgun against a tarantula in case it ever tries to sneak into my apartment. What does everyone think? What defenses would YOU use??? Any spider experts out there?

Well, in the first place, tarantulas are venomous, not poisonous.
Second, their venom is not especially dangerous to humans unless you are allergic to it. I understand it is painful, though.
Third, if I met a tarantula, I would strike an aggressive pose and scare it away.
Fourth, black widow spiders are more dangerous than tarantulas, but still not deadly. They can make you sick though.
Fifth, some tarantulas make good pets.
FINALLY, I think your idea of a shotgun would be more than adequate to kill a sneaking tarantula.
[How do you feel about solifugidae? They aren't venomous, but still quite impressive, and there are a whole slew of stories about their fabled powers.]
