Is this a spider bite?
Yesterday, my mom was bitten by a small, black, shiny insect/arachnid/whatever on the middle finger of her right hand. It was hiding in a fir tree in the back of our yard. Her middle finger is really swollen now and the lower part of her ring and pointer fingers are too. There is one puncture mark, so we don’t think it was a black widow.
She described the bug as like a wingless wasp or a great big ant or something. We live in North Carolina.
Could it have been an assassin beetle? Or a brown recluse?
Thank youuu
This is not a bite from a brown recluse,(you don’t have them)
But could easily be a common spider bite.
This is probably harmless, and your mom will likely be just fine.
Some people have low tolerance to venomous bites/stings, resulting
in excess swelling.
If any systemic reactions are noticed, like sweating, nausea, cramps,
or respiratory stress, she should seek medical attention.
otherwise, ice would be the best treatment, and this should clear
up within a couple or few days.
