Carl Wilhelm Hahn

Life and work life
Carl Wilhelm Hahn was born in Weingartsgreuth Christian, Upper Franconia, the first son of Johann Michael Hahn (1734-1824), which was the palace courtyard and the gardener of the estate of Baron von [? S eckendorff] later, the palace gardener Friedrich von Pckler. Hahn CW weapons obeyed the call General as soon as 1813. He served as mayor in 1816 and received "honorable." He lived with his parents in Frth and, according to Hahn, he decided to devote his life to his taste for natural history, his interest since childhood and intensified during his studies in Erlangen. He started to work on their first bird "birds of Asia, the position of Africa, America and New Holland." When his "many times promised and deserved" has not materialized, Hahn held that by this point in his field, an unusual step and went on their own. Therefore, said a natural historian and sometimes also a scholar. On February 24 1820, had called his part Dr. Phil. University of Erlangen, married Francisca Victoria Kaltdorff, Schaefer NE. His wife, the widow of a doctor, was about five years older than him, and had three children from his previous marriage. It was at that time and without means, but standing next to a large inheritance from his maternal uncle early. His own children Friedericke Anna was born in late 1820 or 1821.
"LCOS Waglerii, mihi" sensu Hahn 1822, spread 3, Table 3
Presumably, Hahn has been in close contact with the famous naturalist Jakob Sturm and probably with his two sons. He called a spider species after Jakob Sturm: "Araneus sturmii" Today "Atea Sturm (Hahn, 1831)" or "S. Araneus (Hahn, 1831). His relationship with Johann Georg Wagler must have been so rigorous. It also appointed a species of spider in his honor: "LCOS Waglerii" Today "Pardosa wagleri (Hahn, 1822)." Nothing reliable is known about other contacts with the notable Nuremberg zoologist productive phase. Nor is there any evidence that Hahn knew Franz von Paula (von) Schrank personally, a very valuable natural science, to whom he dedicated the monograph "Spider." The scientific value of a life's work in natural history Hahn varies. His work on birds, for example, has never had an influence significant in this area. Moreover Working Hahn Bugs (Heteroptera) is as important as his work on spiders (Araneae). A species of insects bears his name: "Hahn Lopus STL, 1860." Also given this honor in the field of Arachnology: Carl Ludwig Koch, who continued "Die Arachniden" after Hahn's death, a genre that bears his name 1841 ("Hahnia"), later called the whole family has been founded – "Hahniidae Bertkau 1878.
According to L. Gebhardt Hahn death in Nuremberg November 7, 1835, "a lung complaint in the prime of life."
Monographie der Spinnen – Monograph on spiders
A On the rarity of the work: at present, only 14 copies known to be partially incomplete. They were registered and examined by Sacher of Germany (Wittenberg, Berlin, Jena, Darmstadt, Erlangen, Kiel, Munich, Frankfurt / M.), England (London), USA (Cambridge / Mass.) Austria (Vienna) and France (Paris). "Der Monographie Spinnen "has become a rarity in the early 20th century. This scarcity is explained by the fact that only minor edits have occurred," More one hundred copies of each tranche will occur, "Hahn said this in 1820. The rarity of complete copies probably due mainly to the time difference between payments. It was not possible if Hahn broke with his editor or Lechner with him. However, a separation took place some time before the publication of the sixth series. In fact, in 1831, the first installment of "Die Arachniden" had already appeared on the Biblioteca Zeh at Nuremberg as a substitute for the obvious "Monographie der Spinnen. It was more accessible and therefore better known than "der Spinnen monograph. In the sixth installment of the der Monograph" Spinnen "Lechner 1831 editor inserts a small format "message", has announced that Hahn had been identified as a writer. Probably the contents of the sixth cut can still be attributed Hahn entirely, although he had only accepted the first five series. For obvious reasons, the editor Lechner was not able to print something new, but still had original drawings in his possession, which published without their consent Hahn. For this reason alone, it was impossible to compete with new draft Hahn. Therefore, it is not surprising that payment has promised not listed ninth.
In the past, there has been some confusion regarding the year of publication, including two slices, 5 and 7. Probably, this confusion was caused by both the partial absence of the prefaces to date and covers for various bands, like the fact that the library and later payments (1822) Editorial Lechner not only on the condition that later were sold, covering is not original, but in many cases also crushed the year of publication year sales. Based on a recent survey of the correlation between payments and years of publication specified below:

It should be noted that a representative of the final copy "monograph der Spinnen" probably does not exist (or more). Copies available at various functions different as detailed Sacher said. For therefore we have used a combined version of the reprint of 1988.
"Cinnaberinus Eresus, walking. Y" Eresus annulatus, mihi "sensu Hahn 1821, fasc. 2
But "Monographie der Spinnen" is more than just a job for bibliophiles.
First, with nine still holds the first description of the species of spider. In the 19th century, it was not unusual that most "new species" has been previously described by other authors. That's because, unlike modern species differentiation, genital structures are not considered at that time. For this reason, minor differences in coloration and markings have led ultimately to different species names. In any case, a sixth of the way described by Hahn remain valid today. Hahn was a good observer and give an accurate description is clearly demonstrated by the example of Eresus annulatus (= E. sandaliatus (Martini & Goeze, 1778)) and E. cinnaberinus (= E. Niger (Petagna, 1787)). Arachnologists After more than 150 years after separation of these taxa at present.
Secondly his monograph is notable. The first monograph of spiders in German. Also 180 years ago, is very rare to use a group like spiders as one of a book. In addition to a natural history of spiders Walckenaer 1806 by the French has not been working this time has the sole purpose spiders.
Third spider pictures in the "Monograph der Spinnen" shows an artist above average Hahn and lithographer.
Finally, the "Monograph der Spinnen "and" Die Arachniden "are different ways to accomplish the same project and both can be regarded as independent works, while Brignoli – a major cataloger Arachnology – considered "Monographie der Spinnen" as a kind of model for "Die Arachniden.
The "Monographie der Spinnen" can be counted among the first works that remain arachnological science news. It is also valuable for the history of science. This pioneering application by therefore assumed to have been sufficiently addressed in the past.
Die Arachniden – Arachnids
Theridion sisyphium (Clerck, 1757) of Die Arachniden by CW Hahn sisyphum 1834 under T. and T. nervosum
Until the late eighteenth century, all studies on spiders, scorpions and related forms are considered part of larger study of entomology, for these insects have been described as wingless and is included in a genus, Aranea Linnaeus about 500 different species. Based on "Wildlife Walckenaer Parisienne (1802) Latreille has created the first series of types of spiders in his work, which marks the true beginning of the systematic arachnological, which was extended by Walckenaer in important "Aptres Insect Natural History (1837-1847). In mid-1800 the center has activity outside France to Germany. An important part of this change was due to work 14-volume C. Hahn and W. Die Arachniden CL Koch (1831-1848). Unlike the French manuscripts with descriptions and illustrations of the two smooth pages miles of beautiful color plates of this work has attracted the attention zoologists everywhere. Simon French arachnologist important was driven by the high number species, described from Germany in "Die Arachniden" while his native country, France is almost nothing was done. In particular, "Die Arachniden" was influential in the founding of a German tradition of active interest in arachnology which flourished for nearly a century. His biggest flaw, as he realized more Later, it was the lack of a natural system of classification, especially above the family.

About CW Hahn
"This person is very stupid, but it is also nice, pretty well, has a fine hand, has much knowledge of natural history and botany, and is an expert in stuffing birds. However, because of his madness, it requires strict supervision. His talent and other capabilities make it worthy of consideration. "The Count Pckler in 1805 to the rank of colonel of the regiment of infantry, Erbach von Henneberg.
